Thankful Turkey Wreath Tradition

This thankful turkey wreath is a great way to keep a focus on being grateful during the month of November. It is a tradition the whole family can participate in.

Thankful Turkey Wreath Thanksgiving Tradition from This is a great way to put the focus on gratitude during the month of November.

It is very important to me and my husband that we raise our kids to be grateful human beings. We want them to know that God has given us so much to be grateful for and we need to acknowledge that daily. We are trying to teach them to be thankful for the small things and to show appreciation to God and those around them.

This thankful turkey wreath is just another way to keep the focus on thanks during the month of November. It is easy to begin thinking about Christmas and the gifts we want and to stop being as grateful for the things we already have.  This wreath gives us a concrete way to stop and focus on thankfulness every single day. It also gives us more opportunities to talk with our kids about gratefulness and being satisfied with what we have right now. We also think about the people in our lives and how we can show them thanks and appreciation.

Materials Needed:

Colored paper – orange, yellow, red and brown

Poster board

Tape or glue

How to Make the Wreath:

The first thing you need to do is cut out the wreath from the poster board. I used a large serving tray to trace the outer circle and a smaller serving bowl for the inner circle. Then I cut it out.

The next thing you need to do is print 5 sets of the feathers from this printable I found. I printed one set on each of the four colors of paper and doubled up on one of the colors. So I had 12 orange, 6 yellow, 6 red and 6 brown feathers for a total of 30 feathers. This gives you one for each day of November. Of course you could always start later in the month as well.

I also printed the turkey body out from the same printable linked to above. I just printed it on brown paper and then used scraps of the orange paper to make a beak and legs for the turkey. Then I glued the turkey to the bottom of the wreath. Now we were ready to start adding feathers!

I asked Evan what he was thankful for today and wrote it on one of the feathers. Allen and I also wrote what we were thankful for on the same feather. Then we attached that feather to the wreath with tape. We will continue adding a feather every day this month.

You could also do several feathers a day or all the feathers at once. A preschool class could do this as a joint decoration and each child could add a feather or two. There are so many possibilities!
