Free Printable Beginning Sound Search and Trace Alphabet Worksheets
These free printable beginning sound search and trace worksheets help your students build letter recognition and beginning sound skills!
They’re a fun, hands-on way for kids to practice identifying beginning sounds while building phonemic awareness.
Beginning Sound Search and Trace Activity
Your students will love searching for pictures that match each letter’s beginning sound, then tracing the corresponding letters! These engaging worksheets are perfect for learners still mastering letter sounds and letter formation. Whether you’re reviewing the alphabet or just introducing beginning sounds, this activity offers fun and meaningful practice in literacy centers.
Each page includes 13 letters at the bottom, printed in a tracing font. Kids will search through a collection of images to find one that begins with each letter, then trace the matching letter once they see the correct picture.
This free printable pack includes four worksheets: two in color and two in black and white. I love offering both options so you can choose what works best for your classroom. Use the black and white version for a no-prep printable option, or laminate the color pages for repeated use during literacy centers.
Simple Print and Play Alphabet Activity
These alphabet sheets are super simple to prep, print, and play! If you’re using the black-and-white version, you can hand them out as worksheets and let students color the pictures and trace the letters. Or, for a reusable option, slip them into write-and-wipe pockets and use dry-erase markers.
If you print the color versions, laminate them, or slide them into pockets for repeated use throughout the week or literacy rotations. Students can use dry-erase markers to circle the matching picture and trace the letters. Want to make it even more interactive? Add mini erasers or themed counters for kids to place on the images as they search.

How to Use the Beginning Sound Worksheets
Students will look at the letters at the bottom of the worksheet and search for a picture that starts with that sound. When they find a match, they will circle the picture (color version) or color it in (black and white version). Then they trace the corresponding letter at the bottom of the page.
They’ll repeat this process for each letter on the page. The repetition builds both sound recognition and fine motor skills through tracing. It’s a great blend of phonics and handwriting practice!
Ideas for the Classroom
These worksheets are super versatile and can be used in so many ways! Add them to your literacy centers, use them as morning work, or pass them out to early finishers. They also make a great take-home activity for extra practice with beginning sounds.
