Directed Drawing Worksheets for Every Season

Directed drawing has quickly become one of my favorite ways to combine art and literacy in one simple, no-prep activity. Kids follow easy step-by-step drawing guides to create a picture, then write about what they made, so they’re practicing fine motor skills, following directions, and sentence writing all at the same time.

I’ve been adding a new set for each season, and I wanted to gather them all in one place so you can grab exactly what you need for right now, then bookmark this page for when the next season rolls around.

Why Directed Drawing Works So Well

Your students will follow a simple step-by-step guide to build their drawing one shape or line at a time, which helps them slow down, pay attention to detail, and build confidence. They will start by drawing the picture by following the steps. Once the picture is done, they move into writing practice, using either a sentence starter they can trace or a blank line for independent writing. That built-in two-version format means every set works for a whole range of writers.

Along the way, kids are strengthening:

Fine motor control and hand-eye coordination
Listening and the ability to follow multi-step directions
Spatial awareness and visual sequencing
Sentence writing and early writing confidence
Creative thinking and pride in their own work

How to Use These Directed Drawing Sheets

Easy prep:

Print the version that fits each learner (trace-and-write for emerging writers, blank lines for independent writers).
Hand out pencils for drawing and writing, plus crayons or colored pencils for adding color afterward.
Guide kids through the drawing steps together, one shape at a time. Or let them work through it independently once they’re familiar with the format.
Have them finish the writing portion, tracing a sentence starter or writing their own sentence about their picture.

These work equally well as a whole-group lesson, an independent literacy center, an early-finisher task, or as a take-home activity.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Directed Drawing

Model the first one or two steps together before sending kids off to work independently, especially with a new set.
Let kids choose which picture to draw when a set has multiple options. Choice builds ownership and motivation.
Mix and match versions at the same table. Because both the trace-and-write and blank-line versions look similar, you can differentiate without singling anyone out.
Bind finished pages into a class book. Kids love flipping through their own and their classmates’ work again and again.
