To play this roll-and-cover math game, students will roll the die and count the dots. They will find the corresponding number on the palm tree and cover it with a manipulative. They will roll again until all the numbers are covered on the tree.
To play with two dice, students will roll two dice and count the dots. Then, they will find the sum and cover the number with a small manipulative. The play continues until all the numbers are covered.
If you don’t want to use manipulatives, you could also turn the mats into roll-and-color printable mats by having the students color the circle with a dry-erase marker.
Another option is to use play dough to cover the spots on the printable mat. This builds fine motor muscles, too!
However you end up using them, students will love learning about numbers with this palm tree math activity.
Differentiation Ideas
Students can play with a partner and use one color per person to cover the numbers on the palm tree.
Do you have students who need more of a challenge? Have students use a recording sheet to write down their addition sentences. Or have them fill in ten frames to match the number they rolled. They could also write numbers to practice number recognition and number formation.
