Pumpkin Addition Cards
Working on addition facts with numbers 1-10 has never been so fun! Your students are going to be engaged and excited to learn with these pumpkin-themed addition to 10 cards.
These task cards focus on adding numbers to 10, creating addition equations, and solving for the sum. This math game is perfect for kindergarten and first grade students.
To play, students will count the pumpkins on each pumpkin patch addition card. As they count, they will point, using one-to-one correspondence to track as they count. Then, they will find the appropriate number tiles to place in the boxes, creating the correct addition equation to match the picture.
There are number tiles provided in the free printable math activity. You can also use other number tiles that you have on hand or have students write the equation with a dry-erase marker.
This is a great activity for fun October or Halloween-themed lesson plans. It is also perfect for math centers. Your students won’t even know they are learning!
Simple, Quick Prep
This pumpkin addition to 10 activity is simple and quick to prep, so you don’t have to worry about using your whole plan period to get it ready! All you need to do is print and laminate the task cards and cut them apart. You can also slide the entire sheet into a write and wipe pocket if you don’t have access to a laminator.
The pumpkin task cards come in color AND black and white so you can use them even if you don’t have access to color printing.
If you are using the number tiles provided, print and cut those out as well. You can laminate these before cutting for added durability.
To store the activity, slide the task cards, number tiles, dry-erase markers, erasers, or whatever you choose to use for the activity into a large zipper baggie or into a colorful tray for easy grab-and-go access for your students.
If you want to use these for math centers or small groups, take that into consideration when you are prepping, as you may be able to make fewer copies!
Differentiating With Pumpkin Addition Cards
This fun pumpkin addition to 10 card game can be used in many different ways to meet your students’ learning styles and developmental needs. You can adjust the difficulty by making small tweaks to the activity. Some ideas for differentiation and using this activity are:
- independent work time
- with partners
- during math centers
- in small groups
- as a “Scoot game” where students build the equation at each station
- with dry-erase markers to practice writing addition facts
- with a recording sheet to practice writing the equation
- using ten frames to help solve the equation
- creating number bonds from the equations
- as a pumpkin addition match game (you will need 2 copies to play this way)
- assign certain students addition to 5 cards and other students addition to 10 cards based on level
- as a fun learning activity during your October, pumpkin, or Halloween-themed unit
Setting up the Pumpkin-Themed Math Cards
Supplies needed:
- Pumpkin Addition to 10 Cards and number tiles
- Classroom number tiles (optional)
- Dry-erase markers (optional)
- Write and wipe pockets (optional)
- Print and laminate the task cards and number tiles OR slide the cards into write and wipe pockets.
- Cut the cards and number tiles apart.
- Store all materials in zipper baggies or trays.
Playing the Pumpkin Addition Card Game
Students will look at the picture on the task card of the pumpkins in the wagons. They will count how many pumpkins are in each wagon in the pumpkin patch and add them together to find the sum.
Then, they will use the number tiles or dry-erase markers to fill in the correct numbers to make the correct addition sentence.
Students can practice reading the addition sentence aloud to themselves or to a partner. Another good practice is to teach students how to check their work to make sure that the equation makes sense.
