Rainbow Rhyming Clip Strips
This rhyming activity comes with 15 clip strips for practice with rhyming simple CVC words. Add them to your literacy centers for lots of fun and learning all year long!
Students will develop phonological skills while playing with rhymes and thinking about how the sounds in the words relate to each other. Phonological awareness is very important because it is the foundation of developing strong readers and writers.
While engaging with this activity and listening for rhyming words, students will begin developing their phonological awareness abilities.
Low Prep
This fun literacy activity is super simple to prep. Just print, laminate and cut the strips apart. Or slip the whole sheet into a write and wipe pocket and use dry erase markers on it or have students mark their answers with rainbow mini erasers.

Setting Up the Rainbow Rhyming Clip Strips
Supplies Needed:
- Rainbow Rhyming Clip Strips (button to get them at the bottom of this post)
- Clothespins, clips, or paperclips
- Scissors
Directions:
- Print the cards. There are 3 strips per page.
- Laminate the strips.
- Cut the strips apart.
- Slide the strips and clothespins or clips into a baggie or tray for easy storage and grab-and-go access.
Learning to Rhyme
Students will pick a card and look at the picture on the card. Then they will look at the picture choices and choose the one that rhymes with the original picture by clipping it with a clothespin.
Encourage students to say the words pictures out loud, so that they can listen for the words that rhyme with each other. You can even ask them to say the word on the rainbow before they say each word on the strip to see if they can hear the rhyme.
This activity will give them a hands-on and engaging way to practice this important skill.
Differentiation Ideas
Make the cards self-checking by adding a small dot or sticker to the back of the card to mark the correct choice. When students have made their choice, they can flip the card over to check if they were right.
They are perfect for kindergarten and first-grade students to practice independently, with a partner, or in a small group. You can even utilize them during whole group instruction.
