Rainbow Secret Code Word Puzzles
Puzzles are always enjoyed by my kids, so I thought it would be cool to create editable puzzles. Not only that, but puzzles that require kids to utilize problem solving skills by cracking the secret code and then completing the puzzle.
The free printable rainbow secret code puzzles have really kept the kids engaged in learning while having fun!
Differentiating the Editable Puzzles
These are very easy to differentiate. Type in any words on the first page and the puzzles will auto-populate with the words you put in.
One side of the puzzle will show the phonics font and the other side will show a regular font.
If your kids are learning to read simple CVC words, you can type those in.
Use them to work on words with blends, words with digraphs, or any other word work you would like. You can even use them for longer spelling words.
There are so many possibilities for word work!
Unfortunately, the phonics font doesn’t have a number option, so you can’t use this one for numbers.
How to Use the Secret Code Word Puzzles
Supplies Needed:
- The Rainbow Secret Code Puzzles (button to download at the bottom of this post)
- Card stock
*You will probably want to laminate these if they will get heavy use.
You will type the 12 words you would like to use for this specific set of puzzles into the blue boxes on the “How to Begin” page in the document and they will auto-populate to the puzzles.
This makes it super simple and easy for you to use the puzzles. No need to download fonts or size it to fit. The font is embedded and all you need to do is type your word list once.
If you want to use this for lots of different lists, just save each file with a different file name. For example, “word list 1,” “word list 2,” “word list 3” and so on.
Using the Rainbow Puzzles
After you have the secret code puzzles ready for use, you are ready to try them out with your students.
They will pick up a secret code piece and use the included key to help them crack the code on the puzzle piece. Once they have determined which word is represented, they will look for the matching piece that has the word on it and then complete the puzzle.
This rainbow activity also includes a recording sheet, should you choose to use it. Students can write the word represented on each puzzle they complete in a space on the sheet.
This makes it perfect for use in your spring literacy centers!
