Monster Addition and Subtraction Mats
We are still enjoying addition and subtractions mats and this silly monster version didn’t disappoint.
They are super simple to use, require no prep beyond printing and slipping into write and wipe pockets, and are engaging for kids.
Children love the game aspect of rolling dice and also enjoy using dry-erase markers to write on the mats.
They are hands-on and give children a chance to explore addition and subtraction with fun manipulatives. In this case, googly eyes!
Changing up the mats and using different kinds of manipulatives ensures that children don’t get bored with these fun addition and subtraction mats.
Differentiating the Addition and Subtraction Mats
You can use regular dice for numbers 1-6 or use 10-sided dice to add and subtract larger numbers.
You can also use foam cubes to make your own dice. This is a great way to differentiate the activity for learners at varying levels of ability.
Some might be working on adding numbers 1-6 while others are adding up to 20 and still others could be working on subtraction.
For the subtraction mats, you will also need to make sure that the dice in the first box is larger than the dice in the second box.
I basically have the kids roll again if the second number is larger than the first or I have them roll both dice and put the larger number in the first box on the mat.
So as you can see, there are lots of ways you can change up these mats to meet the needs of all your students.
Setting Up the Monster Math Activity
Supplies Needed:

- Dice or foam cubes
- Googly eyes or buttons for counting
- Permanent marker
- Dry-erase markers
- Write and wipe pockets (optional)
- Print the mats.
- If desired, make dice to fit the needs of your students.
- Slide them into write and wipe pockets.
Simple and easy!
Playing the Monster Math Game
Children will roll one dice and place it in the first box at the top. Then they will put that many googly eyes on a monster on the mat.
Next, they will roll the second dice and add that many googly eyes to the monsters. Then they will count up all of the googly eyes to see how many there are in total.
When working on subtraction, students will roll a dice and put that many on the monsters. Then they will roll the second dice, make sure it is smaller than the first number and then take that many googly eyes away from the monsters.
Finally, they will write the equation in the spaces at the bottom of the mat.
This can be done over and over again for any period of time, which makes it perfect for math centers!
