Free editable word work literacy mats for Valentine's Day theme. Shows a mat with a while of choices and a heart with a big open mouth. Students spin the spinner and feed the word to the heart by building the word on its mouth. Then there are underwriting lines underneath for writing the word/letter/number.

How to Use the Spin and Build Mats

To begin, each child gets a mat. They will then use a paperclip and pencil to make a spinner. Once they spin, they build the word inside the heart’s mouth that the paperclip landed on. Then, they will write that word on the line.

For example, if the game board has sight words on it. The student will spin the spinner, and they land on the word “went.” They will then build the word in the mouth of the heart. Lastly, they will write the word went on the line. Then, erase and spin again.

Your students will be engaged and learning while using these Valentine’s spin, build, and write mats! You can cover so many concepts since the boards are editable. They would work great for math mats for counting activities, addition cards, number recognition, ten frames, and more.

Don’t just stop with math! They could be used to practice word families, CVC words, reading sight words, or making spelling word cards. I love all the possibilities!

Use these free heart themed mats for letter recognition and letter formation in addition to word work.

So Versatile!

These mats are so versatile because they are an editable resource to fit your classroom needs! Some students can work on letters, while others work on numbers, and higher students can work on sight words. These mats would make a great editable sight word game. You could add a recording sheet for higher students to write their answers on.

I love these mats for a way to make learning fun while practicing spelling words! Each student can be working on the words they struggle with the most.

Instead of using letter or number manipulatives to build the word, students could use play dough to make the word. Adding a sensory option for another learning experience is always a great idea! Plus, they would be building their fine motor skills. A Valentine’s Day activity could be to have the students use conversation hearts to make the words!

These mats could even be filled with addition or subtraction sentences that the students must practice and then complete the answer! They could use math cubes to build a tower to match the number sentence or use candy hearts or mini heart erasers to show the number sentence. They could even use magnet numbers to show the math sentence and answer.

Teachers could use these spin and build mats for literacy centers, math activities, word work stations, small group activities, sight word activities, morning tubs, early finishers, tutoring groups, a home learning task, and so much more!

Use these Valentine's Day word work mats to learn to read and spell CVC words in addition to sight words and high frequency words. You can even use them for phonics instruction by typing in words with blends, digraphs, vowel teams and more!

As you can tell, these editable spin and build mats will be a huge hit in your classroom this February! The cute heart theme will add some fun to your resources, while the fact that you can edit the resource is a huge bonus for busy teachers!
