Using the Letter Formation Strips

Students will love using these letter formation strips! They will draw a strip from the pile and decorate the letter with materials you have in the classroom. This could be using dry erase markers to decorate or outlining the letter with play dough, mini erasers or another manipulative.

Then, they will trace the letter. This can be done with a dry-erase marker. Finally, students will write the letter on the dotted lines provided.

Because this resource comes in black and white, these strips can also be used like worksheets in which case students can use crayons, markers, pencils and other art supplies on them.

This activity gives students multiple ways to practice forming each uppercase and lowercase letter. Decorating the letter allows them to visualize its shape while tracing and writing will help students practice letter formation.

More Ideas to Use the Alphabet Strips

This alphabet activity provides students three different forms of exposure to the same letter. This is very beneficial for students just learning letters or students who are struggling with them.

These strips also make fun playdough mats. Laminate the strips and let students form the letters using playdough or dry-erase markers. Write and wipe pockets are also great options if you don’t love laminating resources.

Another option would be to have students use a small manipulative, such as pom poms, seeds, beads, or jewels, to build the letter. Just make sure you don’t use small pieces with students who still put things in their mouths.
