Building with Kinetic Sand and Blocks
Building with kinetic sand and blocks is a fun engineering challenge that is sure to engage kids! It’s just one of the many things you can do with kinetic sand!
Kinetic sand is one of my son’s favorite things. As a result, I have done quite a few kinetic sand activities with him and I’ve shared a few here on the blog. In fact, one of my most popular posts is 10 Ways to Play with Kinetic Sand.
This building challenge was one of the best we’ve done lately. And it was so simple too!
Supplies Needed:

- Kinetic Sand
- Blocks (I found the small set we used in the $ Spot at Target)
- Tray to contain the sand ( I got mine from Ikea for $1.99)
- I dumped the kinetic sand on the tray and added a couple of handfuls of blocks. That’s it!
Building with Kinetic Sand and Blocks
I showed my son how he could press a block down into the pile of sand and then shake out a block of kinetic sand. He thought this was really cool, so we made a bunch of kinetic sand blocks.
Then he decided it would be cool to build with them. He began stacking them on each other, but had to be careful as they would fall if they weren’t placed carefully. This was a great engineering challenge for him.
After he did that for a while, he decided to build with the plastic blocks in the kinetic sand. This was also lots of fun for him. He even pretended the kinetic sand was the moon and built a flag on it with the blocks.
I love the simplicity and ease of this activity! It is something I can pull out whenever I need to occupy the kids!
Here are some more fun kinetic sand activities!
