These letter sound mats are the perfect alphabet activity for preschool, kindergarten, or first-grade students.
Learning the alphabet can be difficult for some students. Finding the right activity to use in your literacy centers can be very time-consuming! These letter mats are just the thing! Students will practice writing skills, fine motor skills, and letter identification – all in a hands-on and engaging way!

How to Use the Alphabet Mats
Use these alphabet activity mats to teach letter formation in a hands-on way. Students will grab a mat, build the letter with blocks, cover three pictures that begin with the corresponding sound and trace the letter with their finger or dry erase marker.
I like that these mats offer a place for letter tracing and a place to use blocks to make the letter. This will engage multiple areas of the brain and increase the chances of retention.
Beyond using the mats with building blocks, students can also use play dough on the tracing letters at the bottom of the mat.
Students can mark the beginning sound pictures with building blocks, play dough balls, mini erasers or by circling them with dry-erase markers.
Use these mats for:
- Morning tubs
- Morning work
- Literacy centers
- Early finishers
- Tutoring resource
- Small group activity
- At-home practice
