Digital Ocean CVC Word Building Activity
Whether you teach into the summer, teach summer school, or simply want a fun activity to do with your kids at home over the summer, this ocean-themed digital CVC word game is perfect for fun learning.
It’s important to help your kindergarten and first grade students practice their phonics skills, especially reading, writing, and spelling CVC words, over the summer. The more exposure your students have to these words over the summer, the stronger readers they’ll become. You’ll also have to worry less about the summer slide.
This digital ocean CVC word building activity is engaging, developmentally appropriate, and will help your students decode, read, and build CVC words. They’ll practice with short vowel words using each short vowel sound. This makes it the perfect summer review activity, literacy center, or at home practice activity.
This is a great activity for emergent readers. It’s also perfect if you don’t have access to a ton of printable materials, picture cards, or letter tiles. You can use this activity with Google Slides and Seesaw. Therefore, it’s easy for teachers to set their students up through a variety of online learning platforms.
Students will apply their knowledge of letters and sounds to sound out the CVC picture name, build the word, and read the word. They’ll use their word family knowledge and decoding skills in this ocean animal CVC word activity.

Summer CVC Words
Your learners are going to make great gains with their CVC word skills this summer using this activity. There are 18 ocean animal themed slides of practice, giving students ample opportunities to practice their skills.
The pictures on each slide are kid-friendly, making this an activity your students can feel confident completing independently. The instructions are also very straightforward and simple for students.
To use this activity, students will begin by looking at the picture on the sun in the sky. They’ll determine what the picture word is. Next, they’ll drag and drop the fish letter tiles into the ocean to build the matching CVC word. As they build the word, they’ll practice decoding the sounds in the word and reading the complete word.
You can easily tweak this activity to differentiate it for your students and use it with all levels. You can delete slides, reorder slides, or mix slides up. This helps make it less overwhelming for students who may not be ready to work with all 18 slides just yet.
You can also delete slides so students are practicing with only one short vowel sound. As they progress, add in more of the slides so they’re practicing with all of the short vowel sounds.
For students working at a higher level, you can keep all of the slides and mix them up so they work on various short vowel sound words throughout the activity instead of having each short vowel sound grouped together.
To offer another challenge for your higher level learners, you can extend the activity by having them say a sentence using each CVC word. If you do have access to either paper and pencil or a whiteboard and dry-erase marker, you can have them write each CVC word and organize them into word families or alphabetical order. You could also encourage them to write a sentence using each word and their sight words. There are so many ways to practice with this activity!
