Working on Words

These ocean word work mats are a fun and engaging way for students to apply their literacy skills and practice different word and spelling patterns. This activity is also perfect for sight word learning.

With consistent practice, your students will develop stronger phonics and phonemic awareness skills, leading to better reading fluency and comprehension.

This activity has 18 digital slides with fun sea creatures and ocean animals to give it a fun summer theme. On each of the 18 digital word work mats, students get to work with each word in 3 ways.

First, they’ll read the word in the “Read It” box. Then they’ll build the word in the sand by dragging and dropping the correct sea creature and ocean animal letter tiles. Lastly, they’ll type the word in the “Type It” box. The digital letter tiles are in alphabetical order, so students can use their alphabet knowledge to find the letters they need to build each word correctly.

Options for Differentiating

As this activity is editable, that makes it very easy to differentiate the learning for all of your students. No matter which words you include for each student, the activity will look the same for them all, which keeps it fair for all students. This also allows the directions to remain consistent.

You can use different sets of words for different students or small groups of students depending on the skill they’re working on and the words they need the most practice with.

This activity would be a great addition to:

  • Whole group instruction
  • Small group instruction
  • Literacy centers
  • Independent practice
  • At home learning
  • Technology centers
  • Summer learning
  • Morning work
  • Early finisher activity

This activity can easily be assigned via any digital learning platform, such as Google Slides or Seesaw if you have students practicing at home.

If you have students who are mastering their word work activities and are ready for a challenge, there are several ways you can extend this activity with a simple piece of paper and pencil or a whiteboard and dry-erase marker.

A few options are:

  • Finish all slides and write the words in alphabetical order on a whiteboard.
  • Write a paragraph or story using all of the words.
