Editable Flower Bump Game for Word Work

Grab this free word work activity and have fun learning! This game board would make the perfect addition to a spring or flower unit!

It is editable, so you can put whatever skills you want your students to practice into the game board. Sight wordsletters, spelling word lists, digraphs, blends, math facts, the options are endless!

Once you open it, you will type 12 words into the table. The words will auto-populate onto the game board in random positions. Then, print and slide into a wipe and write pocket or laminate for durability.

Start with making a game board with letters in it, and your students can practice letter names and letter sounds—the perfect beginning of the year tool. Then, switch to sight words, phonics skills, or even vocabulary from an emergent reader as your students progress.

I use this at home with my son on his multiplication facts, and my daughter plays an addition game. It is so versatile, and I love that!

This could easily be used in a small group setting, during literacy centers, or for a word work activity.

Teaching high-frequency words can be challenging since students learn them at different speeds, but this game board will work great for that.

I would create all my game boards at once and keep them in zippered baggies labeled with the word lists. Then grab them for a quick sight word game or spelling game. You could even put numbers or addition and simple subtraction sentences to make a math game board!

Simple to Prep!

This fun spring-themed game is perfect for a sight word activity in a small group or whole class setting. It is so easy to prep and won’t take you much time to make multiple board games for all the levels in your classroom!

The free printable has a table that you will type your words into, and it will auto-populate onto the game board and die. There is a color and black and version, so don’t worry if you don’t have access to a color printer.

You will also need some linking cubes or other manipulatives for game pieces for this sight word game. The activity also comes with a die that the students will use to play the game.

Playing the Spring Word Work Game

Set out the game board, die, and pass out 10 linking cubes per player. The first student rolls the die and reads the word it lands on. Then, they find the word on the game board and put one of their cubes on it.

The next player rolls the die, reads the word, and puts a linking cube on that word. You can bump it off if the other player already has a cube there. You can stack another on top and freeze the spot if you already have a cube there. A place with 2 cubes can’t be bumped! The first player to run out of cubes wins!

We also use the game board for practicing sight words. It makes learning them far more fun than using the traditional memorization tools. Games are a great way to encourage learning in a different format!

Ideas to Use the Editable Game Board

Because this board game is editable, it is super easy for you to differentiate it for all of the ability levels of your students. Use the same game for all of your students while giving each one what they need.

You’ll only need to teach them how to use the game board once, and then they will know how to use them over and over again in the future for many different themes. It would be great to have multiple boards for various subjects like math centers, phonics reinforcement, spelling words, and practicing reading sight words.

Here are some more differentiation ideas for this winter board game:

Students roll a dice, move that many spaces, land on a letter, and say its sound.

Students will roll a dice and move to the space with the same number on it. (Can use 6-sided dice, 10-sided dice, or even ten frame dice.)

Students roll two dice, add the numbers together and move to a space with that sum on it.

Players will roll a cube with a letter written on each side and then move to the space that matches the letter rolled.

Students will roll a dice, move that many spaces, land on a word and read it aloud.

Players will roll a cube with blends or digraphs written on each side. Students roll the cube and move to a space with a word that includes that blend or digraph.

On a cube, write 1 on two sides, 2 on two more sides, and 3 on the remaining two sides. Students roll a 1, 2, or a 3 and move to a word with that many syllables.
