Ladybug Missing Sound Cards to Work on CVC Words
These ladybug missing sound cards will help students develop phonemic awareness by practicing adding phonemes to complete CVC words. Add them to your plans this spring season!
Finding the Missing Sound in CVC Words
These free printable missing sound task cards are a simple way to practice adding phonemes to create CVC words in kindergarten. They are simple to prep and will give the kids lots of hands-on practice with phonemic awareness this spring.
If your students fully grasp letter sounds, introducing phonics instruction with CVC words is a significant next step. These simple three-letter words follow a consonant-vowel-consonant pattern, making them easy to sound out and helping to boost confidence in early readers.
Since CVC words all contain a short vowel sound, they are ideal for students just beginning to segment phonemes and spell words.
To start, students will identify the picture on the ladybug card. Then, they will use letter manipulatives or a dry-erase marker to practice adding phonemes and building the corresponding word.

This activity is perfect for literacy centers, small groups, or whole-group instruction in the classroom.
For center activities, laminate the cards and store them in plastic bags, zippered pouches, or photo boxes—available at most craft stores or superstores.

Adding Phonemes to Complete CVC Words
Students will use their understanding of letters and sounds to break the pictured CVC word into individual phonemes and fill in the missing sound to complete the word.
First, they will look at the picture and say the word aloud. Then, they will segment each sound and place the corresponding letter in the empty box.
Finally, students will blend the sounds to read the word they created and confirm that it matches the picture. Practice this in class or small groups a few times to build confidence before having them work independently.
Differentiating the Ladybug Sound Cards
This missing sounds CVC activity is highly versatile and can be used in multiple ways. It’s easy to adjust to fit your schedule, lesson plans, and the diverse learning needs in your classroom.
For students who need extra support with phoneme segmentation, start with fewer cards until they build confidence. Model the activity during teacher time before allowing them to work independently. Meanwhile, students who are excelling can be challenged with additional cards.
To reinforce learning, students can also write the words they build on a recording sheet, which allows them to track their progress while practicing segmenting and blending sounds.
This phonics activity would be perfect for small group instruction or literacy centers, making lesson planning and prepping easy!
Fun Ladybug Books to Extend the Activity
Before letting kids complete their CVC activities, read these fun stories to get them excited about segmenting words!
