Pumpkin Theme Beginning Sounds Activity
Working on beginning sounds is a key phonemic awareness skill that beginning readers must master. As students begin to distinguish the initial sound in words, they are better able to sound out CVC words, use word families, and identify rhyming words. These skills lead to reading success in the future.
This digital pumpkin beginning sounds literacy activity helps students focus on isolating beginning sounds in words. The interactivity of using this activity with technology keeps students engaged and makes learning fun.
Students will look at the picture on the pumpkin theme digital task card and determine what the picture represents. Next, they will look at the 4 lowercase letters on the side of the screen to determine which letter represents the beginning sound of the picture. They will drag the letter matching the beginning sound into the box above the picture.
This activity gives students the opportunity to work with all 26 letter sounds. Thus, it is a great activity for not only learning beginning sounds but learning letters as well. This pumpkin alphabet activity works well with students from preschool to 1st grade.
Setting Up the Pumpkin Beginning Sounds Activity in Google Slides
Students may use Google Slides™ to do this activity.
The download file includes a detailed guide with instructions and pictures on how to use this activity with your students, but it is quite simple to do.
If you are an instructor or teacher, you will want to copy the Google Slides assignment to your Google Drive and save it as a master copy.
Make sure that you click the dropdown next to the attachment. Pick the “Make a copy for each student” option.
Setting Up the Beginning Sounds Activity in Seesaw
Students can also use this activity in Seesaw, if you would like.
You will click the Seesaw specific link in the download file. When you arrive at the activity, you will need to click the “Save Activity” button. Then you will assign the activity to your students.
The Seesaw specific link has two activity parts. Each activity part has 15 slides for a total of 30 slides.

Not only does it help them work on key phonemic awareness skills, but it gives them more experience with using technology for learning. This activity can easily be differentiated to meet the needs of your students. You can assign all 30 slides to those students who are ready, or only 15 slides for those that are still working to grasp this concept. This can easily be done with the Seesaw version as it is already split up into 2 parts. If needed, you can assign even fewer slides or rearrange the slides to work on certain beginning sounds.
