My kids really enjoyed sorting apples and pumpkins after reading the book Apples and Pumpkins by Anne Rockwell. It is one of my kids’ favorite books for this time of year!
This activity is crazy easy to set up! Surprisingly, it was well-liked by both of my kids. I knew my two year old would enjoy it, but I wasn’t expecting my 4 year old to like it so much too. He added a bit of imaginative play to his sorting and actually sorted them a couple of times.

- Apples and Pumpkins by Anne Rockwell
- Apple table scatter (stickers with backs on them would work too) – I got mine at Michael’s
- Pumpkin table scatter (stickers with backs on them would work too) – Also found at Michael’s
- 1 white sheet of paper and 1 green sheet of paper
* Make sure you watch toddlers carefully with small objects like the pumpkins and apples. My daughter is past the mouthing stage and I watched her the ENTIRE time we did this activity. I would NOT leave her unattended while doing this activity. If this is a concern for you, I would skip this activity or use stickers.
- Draw a tree on the white piece of paper with crayons.
- Draw pumpkin vines on the green piece of paper with a green crayon.
- Combine the apples and pumpkins in a small bowl or container.
Sorting Apples and Pumpkins
To begin, I read the book Apples and Pumpkins. Twice, actually. Because my kids really like it!
Then I began modeling the activity for my two-year old (26 months). I picked up an apple and then said “apples go on the tree” and then I picked up a pumpkin and said “pumpkins go in the patch.” I did this over and over a few times and by then she was eager to get started herself.
I was actually quite surprised at how quickly she caught on. I did have to remind her on occasion, but for the most part she was able to do this independently. And she loved it! I think she felt super important because she got to do an activity before her brother.
Eventually, my son came over and I put all of the apples and pumpkins back in the container so he could try it out as well. He really liked it too. He added his own flair by pretending he was a farmer. He had a whole story line to go with the activity. It’s also fun to “pick” the apples and pumpkins and put them back in the container.
This is definitely one we will do again!
