Summer Ice Cream CVC Word Match-Up Activity
If your students work on CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words, this ice cream-themed CVC word match-up will be a hit! It’s a playful, hands-on way to help young learners practice decoding simple words and matching them to corresponding pictures, all while building early reading confidence.
This free printable is perfect for literacy centers, small groups, or independent work. The ice cream theme makes it a great fit for spring, summer, or anytime you need an engaging review.
Build CVC Word Fluency with a Sweet Match Game
This match-up activity includes 20 ice cream cones with CVC words and 20 matching ice cream scoop picture cards. Students will read the word on each cone and then find the scoop with the picture that matches the word. It’s a simple but effective way to reinforce decoding skills, phoneme blending, and vocabulary recognition.
Each match strengthens the connection between written words and visual meaning, which is key for early literacy development.
To make this game self-checking, you can write the matching word on the back of each scoop card. This lets students independently confirm they made the correct match, giving them a sense of ownership over their learning.
Quick and Easy Literacy Center Setup
This CVC activity is easy to prep, print, laminate, and cut. Once the pieces are ready, you can use them year after year in your reading centers or intervention groups.
You’ll also find two versions of a recording sheet included. One allows students to trace the CVC words, while the other has blank spaces for students to write the words independently. This makes it easy to differentiate based on your students’ abilities.

Here’s what you’ll need:
- Ice Cream CVC Word Match-Up Cards (get them at the bottom of this post!)
- Laminator (or write and wipe pockets)
- Scissors or a paper cutter
- Recording sheets
- Dry-erase markers or pencils
Directions:
- Print and laminate the cone and scoop cards.
- Cut out all the pieces.
- Print your choice of recording sheet.
- (Optional) Write the correct word on the back of each picture scoop to make the activity self-checking.
How to Use the CVC Word Match-Up
Students will choose a cone card, read the CVC word printed on it, and then search through the ice cream scoop cards to find the picture that matches the word. Once they’ve found the correct scoop, they’ll place it on the cone.
Then, they’ll use the recording sheet to either trace or write the word, depending on the sheet you’ve given them. This adds a writing and spelling component to the activity, which helps reinforce phonics patterns even more.
Classroom Ideas and Extensions
Here are a few ways to use this resource in your classroom:
- Add it to a literacy center for independent practice.
- Use it during small group instruction to work closely with students still learning to decode CVC words.
- Offer the recording sheets as a fast finisher option or morning work.
- To keep the ice cream theme going, pair the activity with a short read-aloud like Ice Cream: The Full Scoop by Gail Gibbons!
You can even extend the learning by asking students to create a sentence using the word they matched. Just have them write it on their recording sheet for extra writing practice.
