Kindergarteners spend a lot of time practicing CVC words because they are the foundation for reading. CVC words are easy to decode, follow the basic phonetic rules, and are usually included in the child’s vocabulary. Once students master short vowel sounds, they can move on to harder things like long vowels and sight words.

Your students will use their knowledge of letters and sounds as well as word family patterns to practice sounding out CVC words and matching the correct word with the picture on the fish card. The download includes words like map, pen, lip, pot, and sun. There are words with all the short vowels for lots of reading practice.

How to Play the Fish CVC Game

Students will pick a card and look at the fish with the word printed on them. They will sound out the CVC word and then find the matching picture. They will place a clip on the correct image. Then continue until all the cards have been completed.

Students could use these CVC word fish during language arts time, centers’ time, and so much more. They are perfect for preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten students to practice sounding out CVC and short vowel words.

To take this a step further, have students read all of the words aloud as they sound them out and then say the word represented in the picture aloud and then in a sentence.

If students have enough clips, they can complete all of the cards and then unclip them. If they only have one clip, they can complete one at a time, unclip, and move on to the next card.

Lots of Uses

These fish word cards would be so beneficial for multiple levels of readers to make learning fun. Your beginning kids can practice putting sounds together and making sure the words match the pictures—great skills for students learning to read.

While more advanced readers can write their word choices on a recording sheet. By writing their answers, they would be practicing sounding out the word and writing the correct matching letter and letter formations.

Even higher students could be asked to use their words in a sentence or think of rhyming words to match the words on their card.

These CVC clip cards are super versatile and can be used to meet your instructional needs and the needs of your students developmentally. You can incorporate these into whole group lessons, small group lessons, literacy centers, word work, or use them for independent practice, morning work, or reading warm-ups.
