Turkey CVC Roll, Read & Trace Reading Game Sheets for Thanksgiving
This Turkey CVC Roll, Race & Trace Word Game makes CVC word practice feel like a fun game instead of a worksheet. Kids roll a dice, identify a CVC word from a picture, and race to trace every matching word hiding in a turkey’s feathers.
It’s a great fit for November literacy centers and builds picture-to-word connections along with reading fluency.

How to Play

To play with a partner, give each player a different game piece and a different color to trace with. When you’re both finished, count up your traced words and see who traced the most!
Skills Kids Will Practice
- CVC word reading and decoding
- Picture-to-word matching
- Letter formation and handwriting practice
- Phonemic awareness and short vowel sounds
- Turn-taking and friendly competition
Why Kids Love a Read and Trace Game
Turning CVC word practice into a dice game keeps kids focused far longer than a plain worksheet. There’s a bit of chance involved, some friendly racing to trace the most words, and a turkey to fill in along the way, so the repeated reading and writing barely feels like practice.
Tips for Using This Thanksgiving Game in the Classroom or at Home
- Word family focus: Use one board per day to work through short a, e, i, o, and u.
- Mixed review: Save the sixth board for later in the week to check decoding across all five vowel families.
- Partner play: A great literacy center activity where two kids can play and check each other’s work.
- Reuse it: Slip the pages into write-and-wipe pockets or laminate them so kids can play again and again with dry-erase markers.
