Turkey Find and Cover Word Mats
These fun turkey-themed word mats are so easy to make and have a ton of benefits for your students! They could be used for preschool, pre-k, kindergarten, first grade, and beyond. They are editable, so you can add in whatever content you want your students to practice!

Setting Up the Turkey Find and Cover Mats
Supplies Needed:

- Small manipulatives like mini erasers, pom poms, or buttons
- Write and wipe pockets (optional)
- Binder ring for word cards (optional)
Instructions:
- Type your words, numbers or letters into the table in the file.
- Print the mats and word cards.
- Slide the mats into write and wipe pockets OR laminate them.
- Cut the word cards and store in a baggie or place them on a binder ring
- Gather manipulatives, such as buttons, mini erasers, etc.
- Store the entire activity in a colorful tray or large zipper baggie.
Playing the Turkey Word Match
The directions are straightforward, and your students will be able to play independently in no time. Students begin by flipping over a word card from the pile. Then, they will sound out the word.
Next, they will find the corresponding word on the turkey and cover it with their manipulative. Play continues until all of the spaces on the mat are covered.
Differentiating the Turkey Word Game
This find and cover activity is easy to differentiate to meet the needs of your students. If you have students who need more practice with letter identification, you can use letter magnets, letter beads, or another alphabet manipulative. Using these to cover the letters gives them extra exposure to what the letter looks like and its sound.
Students could be working on sight words with this fun thanksgiving activity. You could make a turkey for the pre-primer, primer, and first-grade list so that you could challenge all your students.
These sight word activities would be great for literacy centers, small group activities, whole-class games, after-school tutoring groups, or work for early finishers. Since you decide what goes onto the mats, they can be created to fit all your needs!
Here are some more differentiation ideas for this turkey board game:
Students roll a dice, move that many spaces, land on a letter, and say its sound.
Students will roll a dice and move to the space with the same number on it. (Can use 6-sided dice, 10-sided dice, or even ten frame dice.)
Students roll two dice, add the numbers together and move to a space with that sum on it.
Players will roll a cube with a letter written on each side and then move to the space that matches the letter rolled.
Students will roll a dice, move that many spaces, land on a word and read it aloud.
Players will roll a cube with blends or digraphs written on each side. Students roll the cube and move to a space with a word that includes that blend or digraph.
On a cube, write 1 on two sides, 2 on two more sides, and 3 on the remaining two sides. Students roll a 1, 2, or a 3 and move to a word with that many syllables.
