Beginning Digraphs Word Building Activity
Give your students practice building words with beginning consonant digraphs in a fun, interactive way.
Students will build words like “ship,” “chop” and “think.”
The slides show a picture of the word and the text of the word minus the beginning digraph.
Students will interact with the slides by dragging the virtual digraph letter tiles over to the box and finishing off the word illustrated on the slides.
This gives them lots of practice with reading and spelling beginning digraph words.
Setting Up the Digraphs Activity in Google Slides
Students can use Google Slides™ to do this activity.
The download includes a detailed guide with instructions and pictures on how to use the file with you students, but it is quite simple to do.
If you are a instructor or teacher, you will want to copy the Google slides assignment to your Google Drive and save it as a master copy.
Make sure that you click the dropdown next to the attachment. Pick the “Make a copy for each student” option.
Using the Beginning Digraphs Activity
Students will look at the picture on the slide and determine the name of the object pictured.
Then they they will look for the missing beginning digraph on the right side of the slide. Once they have found the digraph needed to complete the word, they will drag the digraph tile over and finish building the word. Then they will read the word out loud.
The first part of the Google Slides file has the most common digraphs to include: TH-, SH-, CH-. The second half includes the remaining digraphs: PH-, KN-, WH-, and WR-. This makes it easier for you to choose to use only TH, SH, and CH or you can include the rest.
This continues through all of the slides.
The last several slides of the activity include an answer key so that students or parents can easily check their work. You can always delete the slides, if you don’t want them included.
