As your students use this digital butterfly letter sound matching activity, they’ll work to isolate the beginning, middle, and ending sounds in the pictures shown on the screen. There are 15 slides in all, each with 3 pictures for students to practice with. There are 9 slides that focus on beginning sounds, 3 for middle sounds, and 3 for ending sounds.
Each picture on the digital slides is easy to recognize and name, making this literacy activity developmentally appropriate for students in kindergarten and first grade.

Setting Up the Butterfly Letter Sounds Activity in Google Slides
Students may use Google Slides™ to do this activity.
The download file includes a detailed guide with instructions and pictures on how to use this activity with your students, but it is quite simple to do.
If you are an instructor or teacher, you will want to copy the Google Slides assignment to your Google Drive and save it as a master copy.
Make sure that you click the dropdown next to the attachment. Pick the “Make a copy for each student” option.
Setting Up the Letter Sounds Matching Activity in Seesaw
Students can also use this activity in Seesaw, if you would like.
You will click the Seesaw specific link in the download file. When you arrive at the activity, you will need to click the “Save Activity” button. Then you will assign the activity to your students.
Working on Letter Sound Isolation
Isolating the sounds in a word requires phonemic awareness and the ability to differentiate the various sounds heard. Students will practice doing just that with this digital butterfly letter sounds matching activity.
On each of the digital slides, students will look at the pictures on each of the 3 flowers. They’ll determine what the word is and what the beginning, middle, or ending sound is. Then, they’ll look at the 5 butterfly letter tiles at the top of the screen to determine which letter represents the sound. Finally, students will drag and drop the butterfly letter tile over the picture on the flower. Students will complete the same process for the next 2 pictures until all 3 pictures have been covered with a letter tile.
While there are slides for beginning, middle, and ending sounds, the directions remain consistent. Therefore, students will be able to complete this activity independently with success.
You can easily differentiate this activity for your students by assigning 1 sound at a time, deleting slides, mixing up slides, etc. If you have a student or small group that needs to work on a certain type of sound, you can delete the other slides and focus on that skill with them. If you have students who are ready for a challenge, extend the activity by giving them all of the slides and mixing up the order.
To encourage cooperative learning, students can work with a partner by completing their slides and checking each other’s work. In doing this, students will be learning in a different way, giving their brain an extra challenge.
