Caterpillar Non-Standard Measurement Strips for Kids
These caterpillar measurement strips are a hands-on math activity for students to explore measurement in their math centers this spring.
Non-Standard Measurement Activity
If you’re looking for a fun way for students to practice non-standard measurement while learning this spring, look no further. This activity checks all the boxes.
Students will measure the caterpillars on their strips using a variety of objects. Let them think of fun new objects to use to help them understand measurement better.
This gives them lots of fun practice with measuring objects in various sizes.
I find that kids love learning measurement because it is pretty easy to understand and have success with. Using these printables strips is more hands-on and engaging.

How to Use the Spring Caterpillar Non-Standard Measurement Strips
If students measure the caterpillars with snap cubes, they will line them up on the caterpillar strip in front of them. Once the cubes reach the end of the caterpillar, they will stop and count their cubes.
Using their recording sheet, they will write down how many cubes long each insect is. Kids can work on the strips on their own or with partners. These sheets are easy to place in centers or use with kids during intervention.
You can switch up your unit of measurement if you wish. Try using erasers, pencils, manipulatives, dice, marbles, etc.
Students will continue measuring until their time at the math center is over or until they have gone through all the caterpillars.
Ways to Extend the Spring Measurement Activity
If you want to extend your math lessons, try some of these fun ideas!
Add the book Ten Wriggly, Wiggly Caterpillars to your plans before you begin the measurement activity. Kids love when you read a book to kick off a fun lesson. Another book option is Ten Little Caterpillars! Both titles will get kids excited to practice their measurement and counting skills.
