How to Use the Roll and Build Mats

Your students will roll a die, and then they will feed the caterpillar the corresponding letters or numbers. There are also lines at the bottom for the student to write the word or letters.

For example, if the game board has CVC words on it. The student will roll the die and land on the word “cat.” First, they will read the word. Then they will build the word in the mouth of the caterpillar. Lastly, they will write the word “cat” on the line. Then, erase and roll again. The line is long enough for students to write the word or letter more than once, if you would like.

Your students will be engaged in fun and learning while using these read, build, and write mats! Since the mats are editable, you can cover so many concepts.

They could be used to practice CVC words, words with blends or digraphs, high-frequency words, sight words, and more!

Plus, you can even use them for math skills like number recognition and math facts.

I just love all the possibilities!

Easy to differentiate!

Teachers could use these roll and build word work mats for literacy centers, math centers, word work stations, small group activities, morning tubs, early finishers, tutoring groups, and even homeschool.

Because these mats are editable, they are so versatile! Some students can work on letters, while others work on CVC words, and still others could be working on high frequency words.

Instead of using letter tiles or number manipulatives to build the word, students could use play dough to make the word. Adding in a sensory option for another learning experience is always a great idea! Plus, they would be building their fine motor muscles.

These mats could even be filled with addition or subtraction sentences that the students must practice and then complete the answer! They could use math cubes to build a tower to match the number sentence or use mini erasers to show the number sentence. They could even use magnet numbers as well.

Feed the caterpillar word work mats that you can edit and type in any words you want.
