Acorn Letter Sounds Matching Activity

As students build on their uppercase and lowercase letter and sound recognition skills, they begin working on manipulating the sounds in words. Isolating the beginning, middle, and ending sounds in words is a key literacy skill. This skill leads to blending sounds and decoding CVC words, which is a foundational step to reading.

This digital acorn letter sounds matching activity is a fun and challenging matching game for students to practice letter-sound isolation in a fun, fall-themed way!

These acorn alphabet sound mats give students the opportunity to practice listening and isolating the beginning, middle, and ending sounds in words. Each of the 5 acorn mats focuses on one type of sound with 9 different pictures on each mat. This allows students to focus solely on one type of sound, which is important as they begin working on letter-sound isolation.

As students work to match the lowercase letter acorn pieces to the pictures on the mat, they will build phonemic awareness and phonics skills. They will work with both letter-sound isolation and letter recognition.

This digital acorn letter sounds matching activity could be completed as a whole class to help teach the concept. You can also use this activity as a small group activity. Your small groups can be broken up by sound as well. As students progress, your groups may change.

This acorn letter sounds matching activity is perfect for students in kindergarten, first, and second grade. Since it is digital, this activity works great at school or at home.

Working on Sound Isolation

Working on letter sounds and isolating these sounds is one of the essential phonemic awareness skills that help students build a strong reading foundation. This acorn letter sounds matching activity gives students multiple ways to learn and play. They will not only work on isolating sounds, but they will be working on segmenting words into sounds. This will help them determine the beginning, middle, and ending sounds in each picture. Finally, students will use letter recognition to match the lowercase acorn letters to the correct sound in each picture.

To use the digital activity, students will look at the picture on the digital acorn mat. The mat will either focus on beginning, middle, or ending sounds. They will determine what the sound of focus is for each of the 9 pictures on the mat. Then, they will find the matching acorn letter piece and drag and drop the piece to put the acorn over the matching picture.

There are endless opportunities for using this activity. Not only will students work on key literacy skills, but this is also a great activity to work on fine motor skills as students drag and drop the acorns.

Differentiation Ideas

You can differentiate this activity to meet the needs of your students and their skills. There are 3 beginning sounds mats, 1 middle sound mat, and 1 ending sound mat. Each mat has 9 different pictures.

To scaffold the learning, begin with the beginning sounds mats. Then, move on to the middle and ending sounds mats. It is good practice to ensure that students are grasping the concept with one set of sounds before moving on to the next.

To meet students’ needs, you can assign only the particular sound mats that they need to work on and leave out the rest. If a student needs to work on a particular sound isolation skill, you can assign that particular style of mat.

When students have begun to master the concept of each sound, you can assign all of the acorn letter sounds matching mats. They will put all of their skills into action and work to match the sounds on all of the beginning, middle, and ending sounds mats.

For an added challenge, you can mix up the mats and have students choose one to work on, giving them an element of surprise, which is fun for them! To take it a step further, students can sound out each word and write it on a recording sheet. Have them underline the sound of focus.
