Apple Bump Game for Word Work

Needing a resource that can be changed to meet all the students’ levels in the room? You have found it! This free printable bump game is so easy to use and will take you no time to make multiple game boards for your students. On the printable, you will type the sight words, letters, numbers, digraphs, etc. into the table and they will auto-populate onto the game board and die. Then, print and go!

Quick and Simple

The word bump game is the perfect tool to practice sight words, spelling lists, or high-frequency words. It is so easy for you to incorporate into your lesson plans and use multiple ways.

Once you open it, you will type 12 words into the table. The words will auto-populate onto the game board in random positions. Then, print and slide into a wipe and write pocket or laminate for durability. It also comes in color AND black and white so you can use it even if you don’t have access to color printing.

This could easily be used in a small group setting, during literacy centers, or for a word work activity. Teaching sight words can be tough since students learn them at different speeds but this game board will work great for that. I would create all my game boards at once, and keep them in zippered baggies labeled with the word lists. Then grab them for a quick sight word game or spelling game. You could even put numbers or addition and subtraction simple sentences to make a math game board!

Playing the Editable Apple Bump Game

Set out the game board, die, and pass out 10 linking cubes per player. The first person rolls the die and reads the word that it lands on. Then, they find the word on the game board and puts one of their cubes on it. The next player rolls the die, reads the word, and puts a linking cube on that word. If the other player already has a cube there, you can bump it off. If you already have a cube there, you can stack another on top and freeze the spot. A spot with 2 cubes can’t be bumped! The first player to run out of cubes wins!

When I use the game board with my daughter, she practices identifying the names of everyone in our family. So she rolls the die and reads the name, then finds the name and places a cube on it.

My son has been using the game board to reinforce multiplication facts. He rolls the die, lands on a math fact, solves it, and writes the number sentence on a piece of paper.

We are also using the game board for sight words. It makes learning them far more fun than using the traditional memorization tools. Games are a great way to encourage learning in a different format!

So Versatile!

Because this board game is editable, it is super easy for you to differentiate it for all of the ability levels of your students. Use the exact same game for all of your students while giving each one what they need. You’ll only need to teach them how to use the game board once and then they will know how to use them over and over again in the future for many different word lists.

Here are some more differentiation ideas for this apple bump game:

Students roll a die, move that many spaces, land on a letter, and say its sound.

Students will roll a die and move to the space with the same number on it. (Can use 6-sided dice, 10-sided dice, or even ten frame dice.)

Students roll two dice, add the numbers together and move to a space with that sum on it.

Players will roll a cube with a letter written on each side and then move to a space that matches the letter rolled.

Students will roll a die, move that many spaces, land on a word and read it out loud.

Players will roll a cube with blends or digraphs written on each side. Students roll the cube and move to a space with a word that includes that blend or digraph.

On a cube, write 1 on two sides, 2 on two more sides, and 3 on the remaining two sides. Students roll a 1, 2, or a 3 and move to a word with that many syllables.

You could have the students write the word they land on and use it in a sentence.

This apple bump activity can be differentiated in so many ways and reinforce so many skills. It is sure to make learning these important skills both fun and effective! It will be a hit for practicing reading, sight words, spelling lists, and so much more!
