How To Use The Phoneme Substitution Cards

Students will pick a card and read the CVC word. I like to have them build the word written on the card in the boxes.

Then, they will look at the picture for the new word they are supposed to make. Students will stretch the word to isolate the sounds and spell the new CVC word in the boxes by substituting the final sound in the first word for the final sound heard in the new word they are building.

They can use letter manipulatives or dry-erase markers to make the new CVC word. Students will improve their phonics and fine motor skills in one activity!

More Ideas!

These phonics word cards can be differentiated easily. You could fill in the first two letters, and they only have to students only find the ending sound. Or you could have students help you build the words during small group instruction.

More advanced students can do this more independently. They could even be asked to write the new word they built on a recording sheet.

These cards could be used for:

  • Morning work
  • Early finishers task
  • Tutoring resource
  • Small group activity
  • Literacy centers
  • Pocket chart centers
  • Partner task
  • At home project
