This free math activity comes with 16 clip cards for practicing shape identification and building fine motor skills. Add them to your math centers for lots of fun and learning all year long!

Learning the names of the shapes is usually mastered in preschool or kindergarten and we know that hands-on activities are far more engaging for young children. So, I created these interactive clip cards for students to practice shape identification and identify real-world objects that match those shapes.

This fun learning activity will be ready in no time with three easy steps! Simply print, cut, laminate, DONE! Don’t spend all your prep time creating math activities when I have you covered.

Gather some clothespins or cute clips, and your students will be ready to practice in no time. Print in color or black and white to meet your classroom needs.

Setting Up the Shape Matching Clip Cards

Supplies Needed:

  • Shape Matching Clip Cards (button to get them at the bottom of this post)
  • Clothespins, clips, or paperclips
  • Scissors

Directions:

  1. Print the cards. There are 4 cards per page.
  2. Laminate the cards.
  3. Cut the cards apart.
  4. Slide the cards and clothespins or clips into a baggie or tray for easy storage and grab-and-go access.

How to Use the Shape Clip Cards

Students will pick a card and look at the shape printed on the card. Then they will identify the real world object that matches that shape. Lastly, they will clip or mark their answer.

Don’t want to use clothespins? Slide the cards into wipe and write pockets and use dry-erase markers to circle the matching object. Or use mini erasers to mark the correct object. There are lots of ways to change it up!

How to Use this 2D Shapes Math Activity

This shape matching activity would be so beneficial for multiple levels of students. Your beginning mathematicians can practice just the basic shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle).

While more advanced learners can work on some of the other shapes like an oval, octagon, hexagon, and pentagon. They can also work with a recording sheet to draw the corresponding shape.

These shape clip cards are super versatile and can be used to meet your instructional needs and the needs of your students developmentally.

You can incorporate these into whole group lessons, small group lessons, math centers, and early finishers, or use them for independent practice, morning work, or math warm-ups.
