How to Use the Spin and Build Mats

To begin, each child gets a mat. They will then place a transparent spinner over the spinner on the mat . Once they spin, they build the word they landed on inside the crayon box’s mouth. Finally, they will write that word on the line.

For example, if the game board has CVC words on it. The student will spin the spinner and land on the word “cat.” They will then build the word in the mouth of the crayon box. Lastly, they will write the word “cat” on the line. Then, erase and spin again. The line is long enough for students to write the word more than once, if you would like.

Your students will be engaged in fun and learning while using these read, build, and write mats! You can cover so many concepts since the mats are editable.

They could be used to practice CVC words, words with digraphs or blends, high frequency words or spelling words.

They also work great for math skills like counting, addition facts, number recognition and more.

I just love all the possibilities!

Practice phonics skills like blends, digraphs and more while using these hands-on interactive word work mats.

Easy to differentiate!

These free printable mats are so versatile because they are editable to fit your classroom needs! Some students can work on letters, while others work on CVC words, and higher students can work on high frequency words.

I love these mats for a fun way to practice spelling words! Each student can be working on the words they struggle with the most. It gives them a hands-on learning experience that can’t be beaten.

Instead of using letter or number manipulatives to build the word, students could use play dough to make the word. Adding in a sensory option for another learning experience is always a great idea! Plus, they would be building their fine motor muscles.

These mats could even be filled with addition or subtraction sentences that the students must practice and then complete the answer! They could use math cubes to build a tower to match the number sentence or use mini erasers to show the number sentence. They could even use magnet numbers to show the math sentence and answer.

Teachers could use these spin and build mats for literacy centers, math centers, word work stations, small group activities, morning tubs, early finishers, tutoring groups, a home learning task, and so much more!
