Learning to Read CVC Words
Students will pick a card and look at the word printed on the card. Then they will sound out the CVC word and read it out loud to themselves.
Then they will look at the picture choices and choose the one that matches the word by clipping it with a clothespin. Don’t want to use clothespins? Slide the cards into wipe and write pockets and use dry-erase markers to circle the matching picture. Or have students mark their answers with mini erasers.
Make the cards self-checking by adding a small dot or sticker to the back of the card to mark the correct choice. When students have made their choice, they can flip the card over to check if they were right.
They are perfect for kindergarten and first-grade students to practice independently, with a partner or in a small group.
Lots of Uses
These CVC word cards would be so beneficial for multiple levels of readers. Your beginning readers can practice putting sounds together and ensuring the words match the pictures.
While more advanced readers can write their word choices on a recording sheet. By writing their answers, they would be practicing sounding out the word and writing the correct matching letter and letter formations.
Even higher students could be asked to use their words in a sentence or think of rhyming words to match the words on their cards.
These CVC clip cards are super versatile and can be used to meet your instructional needs and the needs of your students developmentally. You can incorporate these into whole group lessons, small group lessons, literacy centers, and word work, or use them for independent practice, morning work, or reading warm-ups.
