Editable Scarecrow Spin and Build Mats
This free printable is customizable so that it can be used for preschool, pre-k, kindergarten, first grade, and beyond. It comes with a chart that you fill in with whatever topic you want your students to practice. The chart has ten spots to complete, and then it will automatically put those words (or numbers, letters, etc.) into a spinner.
The students will spin the spinner, and then they will feed the scarecrow that item. There are also lines at the bottom for the student to write that item too.
The possibilities are endless when using this activity because you can easily differentiate or put whatever skill you want to focus on into the mats. You could practice number identification, letter identification, high frequency words, spelling words, CVC words, rhyming words, math sentences, and so much more!
Easy to Make
The scarecrow-themed mats are so easy to make, and it won’t take you long to make a bunch of mats to meet the many needs of your students. Simply type 10 words into the chart and print. There is a black and white AND color option to meet your needs better.
Once you print them, slide them into a wipe and write pocket or laminate them for durability. Then, the learning mats are ready to be used!

How to Use the Spin and Build Mats
To begin, each child gets a mat. They will then use a paperclip and pencil to make a spinner. Once they spin, they will build the word that the paperclip landed on. Then, they will write that word on the line.
For example, if the game board has sight words or high frequency words on it. The student will spin the spinner, and they land on the word “she.” They will then build the word in the mouth of the scarecrow. Lastly, they will write the word she on the line. Then, erase and spin again.
Students will be practicing their words, letter, or numbers and improving their fine motor skills using the spinner. It encourages small and large muscle functions.
So Versatile
These mats are so versatile because they are editable to fit your classroom needs! Some students can work on letters, while others work on numbers, and higher students can work on sight words.
I love these mats for a fun way to practice spelling words! Each student can be working on the words they struggle with the most.
Instead of using letter or number manipulatives to build the word, students could use play dough to make the word. Adding in a sensory option for another learning experience is always a great idea! Plus, they will love building a scarecrow a tasty learning treat!
These mats could even be filled with addition or subtraction sentences that the students must practice and then complete the answer! They could use math cubes to build a tower to match the number sentence or use counters to show the number sentence. They could even use magnet numbers to show the math sentence and answer.
Teachers could use these mats for literacy centers, math centers, word work stations, small group activities, tutoring groups, a home learning task, and so much more!
