One of the foundational skills of learning to read is blending and segmenting words. Practicing these skills frequently is incredibly important to student success. Use these gingerbread-themed segmentation cards to practice in a fun and engaging way. They are perfect for kindergarten and first grade.

Add it to your literacy centers or phonics centers to give kids a new way to practice segmenting words with 3 and 4 individual sounds. Afterward, students can slide their fingers under each dot and blend the sounds.

A Fun Winter Phonemic Awareness Activity

If you love easy prep activities for kids, this is great. All you have to do is print the mini mats, cut them apart, and laminate them. They don’t have to be laminated, but this ensures you can use them again and again.

Using the Phoneme Segmentation Cards

To use this resource, students will place a word card in the box at the upper left-hand corner of the mat. They will look at it and determine the word pictured.

Then, they will segment the sounds in that word by touching a dot on the gingerbread house and saying one sound for each dot.

If using the cards with candies, students will touch each candy as they say each sound in the word.

Students can also use the word mapping sheets to help with listening for sounds and recording them as they go.

The cards have words pictured that are either 3 or 4 sounds. Many of the words with three sounds are CVC words, CVCe words or words with digraphs, and many of the words with four sounds are words with beginning or ending blends.

For example, the card with a dog is placed on the mat with three dots. The student touches the first dot and says the beginning sound in the word, then they touch the second dot and say the middle sound, and finally, they touch the third dot and say the third and final sound in the word.

Here’s how that looks:

  • Touch the first dot and say the /d/ sound.
  • Touch the second dot and say the /o/ sound.
  • Touch the third dot and say the /g/ sound.

For mats with four sounds, here is an example using the word crane :

  • Touch the first dot and say the /c/ sound.
  • Touch the second dot and say the /r/ sound.
  • Touch the third dot and say the /a/ sound.
  • Touch the fourth dot and say the /n/ sound.

Differentiating the Phoneme Segmentation Cards

You can choose whether to have your students work on words with three sounds, four sounds, or both.

If they are beginning to learn phoneme segmentation, you can assign fewer word cards to complete until they are more confident in their skills. Students who are really excelling with their phonemic awareness skills can do more word cards at a time.

The mats can be used in small groups with teacher guidance or independently in centers.

You can also add the recording sheet for practice with word mapping.

Gingerbread phoneme segmentation cards are a fun way to practice phonics skills during the holiday season. Kids will enjoy the candy and cookie-themed mats and won’t even realize they are learning.

I hope this fun phonemic awareness activity is helpful in your centers and small groups and provides tons of hands-on practice for your students.
