Learning to Rhyme

Students will pick a card and look at the first picture on the card. Then they will look at the picture choices and choose the one that rhymes with the original picture by clipping it with a clothespin.

Encourage students to say the CVC words on the pictures out loud, so that they can listen for the words that rhyme with each other. You can even ask them to say the word pictured in the box before they say each word on the strip to see if they can hear the rhyme.

This activity will give them a hands-on and engaging way to practice this.

Differentiation Ideas

Make the cards self-checking by adding a small dot or sticker to the back of the card to mark the correct choice. When students have made their choice, they can flip the card over to check if they were right.

They are perfect for kindergarten and first-grade students to practice independently, with a partner, or in a small group. You can even utilize them during whole group instruction.

Add them to your literacy instruction for lots of hands-on practice with CVC rhyming!
