## Spring Caterpillar Roll & Cover the Number

Your students will love this fun spring math activity. There are two mats for differentiated hands-on play. One mat features the numbers 1-6, and the other has the numbers 2-12. Students will roll one or two dice, depending on the mat you choose for them.

This spring roll and cover game will work great for preschool, pre-k, or kindergarten students to practice number recognition, addition, counting, composing numbers, and so much more.

There are two mats for differentiated instruction, which hits so many math skills in one printable! Some students can work on number recognition with one die and the lower-level mat. Others can work on addition or subitizing with two dice and the more advanced mat.

## Using This Spring Caterpillar Math Game

To play this roll-and-cover math game, students will roll the die and count the dots. They will find the corresponding number on the caterpillar and cover it with a manipulative. They will roll again until all the numbers are covered on the caterpillar.

To play with two dice, students will roll two dice and count the dots. Then, they will find the sum and cover the number with a small manipulative. The play continues until all the numbers are covered.

If you don’t want to use manipulatives, you could also turn the mats into roll-and-color printable mats by having the students color the circle with a dry-erase marker.

Another option is to use play dough to cover the spots on the printable mat. This builds fine motor muscles, too!

However you end up using them, students will love learning about numbers with these caterpillar number mats.

## Differentiation Ideas

Students can play with a partner and use one color per person to cover the numbers on the insect.

Do you have students who need more of a challenge? Have students use a recording sheet to write down their addition sentences. Or have them fill in ten frames to match the number they rolled. They could also write numbers to practice number recognition and number formation.

Grab the spring caterpillar roll and cover the number mats to make your life a little less stressful this springtime! Your students will be working on so many math skills with this one roll and cover mat, so it will surely be a big help!
