## Insect Decomposing Numbers Mat Math Activity

This number sense activity is just what you need to get your students practicing their math skills. Add it to your math center for practice with countingadditionnumber recognition, composing and decomposing numbers, one-to-one correspondence, and fine motor practice!

There are two color insect mats to decompose any number. Each mat has a spot to place a number and write a simple addition equation.

## How to differentiate the Number Mats

Students will use either the ladybug or butterfly decomposing mats. They will break apart the number on either side of the insect’s body (two wings for two numbers). Then, they will write the equation in the spaces at the bottom.

They can be adapted to meet the needs of students at a huge variety of levels! Use for numbers 0-10 or for teen numbers and more!

You can easily place base ten blocks on each side to make higher numbers too.

## Spring Insects Math Activity

You will print the mats out and slide them into a write-and-wipe pocket or laminate for durability. Then gather some counting manipulatives, dry erase markers, and pencils and begin playing!

No cutting, coloring, or gluing is required! From one print-out, your students will practice their number recognition, addition, counting, one-to-one correspondence, and fine motor skills!

3. Write an equation to match the butterfly or ladybug at the bottom of the mat.

## Other Ways to Use the Decomposing Mats

If students aren’t ready to write equations, just have them choose numbers and break them into parts.

Students will also love building towers and snapping them into pieces to place on either side of the insect. This will slowly build their confidence to write equations down the line.

You can choose to use any numbers you would like to as well.

Plus, you can have students write down their equations on a sheet of paper to serve as a recording sheet for this number sense activity.

Place these in math centers or morning tubs. They are also great for math small groups to help students with specific skills.
