Mastering Addition Facts to 20

This gingerbread math game will help your students improve their math fact skills all throughout the holiday season! There are 17 slides with different addition equations, all with sums between 10 and 20.

To use this holiday activity, students will look at the addition equation at the top of the screen. Then, they will use the gingerbread cookie pieces to model the addition problem on the ten-frame cookie sheets. Finally, they will count the cookies to solve the addition problem. The last step is to type the sum in the answer box at the bottom of the screen.

The cookie sheet ten-frames serve as a great math tool for students. It helps to organize their thinking and work with the addition equation in a hands-on way. This digital gingerbread man activity allows students to use a hands-on approach without needing physical manipulatives.

While the students practice solving the addition equations within 20, they can also take it a step further by saying the complete addition equation out loud, which helps the learning stick!

Differentiated Gingerbread Addition Activities

These fun and engaging digital gingerbread addition mats can be differentiated to meet the various needs of your students.

You can assign fewer slides to students who may be overwhelmed by completing all 17 slides. You can start with 5 slides and work your way up. A good practice would be to choose the 5 smallest sums for students to work on first. As their skills improve, you can add slides with larger sums.

For students who are ready for more of a challenge, you can assign them all of the slides. You may put the slides in the order of least to greatest sum or you can mix up the slides and sums.

Another idea is to group your students together based on skill level and have them work on a certain number of slides together in your small group math centers.

More Ways to Use This Activity

To make students feel special, you could call on students to project their digital addition mat onto the screen to model how to solve the problem for the class.

Students can also practice writing the complete addition equation on a recording sheet if you want to incorporate that into the activity. For a real challenge, students can write the turnaround fact or the entire fact family too!

This fun Christmas activity could be used as a whole group addition practice activity, small group activity, Christmas math center, bell ringer, exit ticket, assessment, early finisher activity, at-home learning activity, or even as a winter break challenge.

I can’t wait for your students to use this digital gingerbread addition within 20 activity! I hope it brings a lot of holiday-inspired fun and learning into your math lessons this Christmas season!
