Snowflake CVC Word Building Strips for Kids
These CVC word strips are so fun to use and have so many benefits for your kindergarten or first-grade students. Reading CVC words is one of the first reading skills that students master.
CVC words are simple words that follow a consonant vowel consonant word pattern. They all feature a short vowel sound which makes them perfect for decoding words. Students can focus on each letter, not just trying to figure out the middle sound.
Students will identify the picture that is inside the snowflake. Then they will use letter manipulatives to spell that word. They could use magnetic letters or letter beads to build the words or use a dry-erase marker to write the words.
I love this word-building activity because it gives students another chance to practice spelling CVC words in a new format. These word strips for building consonant vowel consonant words could easily be printed in black and white to save on ink.
There are 15 word strips included, and there are letter tiles that can be printed, as well. The free resource also includes a recording sheet. Students will love building CVC words with this free resource!
Prep is a Breeze!
Students will apply their knowledge of letters and sounds to sound out the CVC picture name, build the word, and read the word. In this snowflake CVC word activity, they’ll use their word family knowledge and decoding skills.
These CVC word-building mats are quick and easy to get ready for your students. All you have to do is print and laminate! Instead of laminating, you can also slide the mats into write and wipe pockets for added durability.
For easy storage, place the CVC word-building mats in a large baggie, file folder, or storage tray for easy grab-and-go access.

Using the CVC Word Mats
Students will look at the pictures on the word mat to use this activity. Then, they will say the name of the photographic image. Then, they will isolate the sounds in the word, blending them to decode the word.
Next, they will use the letter tiles to build the CVC word beside that picture on the mat. They will repeat this process for each picture, checking if the word matches the picture.
To extend the learning, students can say each word aloud, sounding out and blending the sounds to read the CVC word. Doing this out loud helps students learn in an auditory way.
Differentiated Snowflake CVC Word Building Activities
These winter-themed word-building mats are so versatile and can be used in various ways. You can use these to fit the needs in your schedule and lesson plans and the needs of your learners and their learning styles.
If they are still working on blending and decoding sounds, you can assign fewer mats to complete until they are more confident in their skills. Students rocking their reading skills can complete more mats, working up to all 5 pages! They will love learning to read!
Since there are 5 pages, you can easily have students complete 1 per day throughout the week. Once they know the structure of this activity, they will be set for the week! This would be a perfect literacy center or small group activity, making lesson planning and prepping easy!
Extension Ideas With Snowflake Word Building Mats
These word-building mats are a great complete activity, but they can also be used as a foundational activity that can be extended in many ways. Here are some different ways in which you can use these mats!
