Back to School Sight Word Building Mats
These back to school sight word building mats are a great way to help kids learn sight words and do word work. Kids will love sight word practice with these mats because they are digital and allow for active learning.
These sight word mats help teach sight words in many ways. Kids will read, type, and build the word, encouraging them to work on reading the word as well as practice spelling.
This activity can be used for grades Kindergarten through 2nd grade. During back to school time, you can review words from the previous year and introduce new high frequency words. All you need to do is enter the words from the word list into the “Read It” section and the students can get started!

Working On Sight Words
This activity can be differentiated and used for all levels of students. You can choose the word list and high frequency words they work on, tailoring it to their level. You can even use this to practice color words and number words too. Just be sure to change out the words in the “Read It” section before having the students begin.
To play, the students will read the sight word. Then, they will practice writing the word by typing it in the box. Finally, they will build it using the digital magnetic letters.
All of the letters are found on the screen with consonants being blue and vowels being red. This will help your students differentiate the two types of letters when building.
Not only are these back to school sight word building mats great for word work, but the mats are perfect for helping your students practice using technology too.
This activity is easy for the kids to understand, making it highly effective. Students can complete this activity individually, in small groups, or as a part of literacy centers. It may also be a good early finisher activity for your students.
I hope your students enjoy coming back to school and using these sight word building mats. Feel free to use these throughout the year with your high frequency words!
