How to Use the Spin and Build Mats
To begin, students will place a transparent spinner over the spinner on the mat . Once they spin, they count that amount of manipulatives and place them inside the snowman’s mouth. Finally, they will write that number on the line.
For example, if the game board has the numbers 1-5 on it. The student will spin the spinner and land on the number “2.” They will then count out 2 manipulatives and place them inside the snowman’s mouth.
Lastly, they will write the number “2” on the line. Then, erase and spin again. The line is long enough for students to write the number more than once, if you would like.
Another option is for students to feed that number to the snowman by placing a number magnet or number tile in the snowman’s mouth.
Your students will be engaged in fun and learning while using these read, build, and write mats! They work great for math skills like counting, number recognition, number sense, number formation and more!
I just love all the possibilities and ways to differentiate!
Easy to differentiate!
These free counting mats are so versatile because it comes with 3 variations to fit your classroom needs! Some students can work the numbers 1-5, while others work on 1-10, and higher students can work on 11-20.
Instead of using number manipulatives, students could use play dough to fill the snowman’s mouth. Adding in a sensory option for another learning experience is always a great idea! Plus, they would be building their fine motor muscles.
They could use math cubes to build a tower to match the number or use mini erasers to show the number.
Need a fun activity for math facts? Have students spin the spinner twice and make an addition sentence on the writing line. Then, feed the snowman the total.
Teachers could use these spin and build mats for math centers, small group activities, morning tubs, early finishers, tutoring groups, a home learning task, and so much more!
