Consonant Blends: What They Are and How to Teach Them
If you are looking for ways to teach consonant blends to kindergarten and first grade students, then you will find lots of information and printable activities here. These printable consonant blend activities will make learning this important skill both fun and engaging.
What is a consonant blend?
A consonant blend (also called a consonant cluster) is when 2 or 3 consonants come before or after a vowel in a word. They can be found at the beginning or end of word and may even show up in the middle of a longer word.
Examples of consonant blends at the beginning of a word: stop, frog, drum.
Examples of consonant blends at the end of a word: jump, lost, help
A key feature of a consonant blend is that each consonant sound is heard individually. The two consonants do not make a new sound like a digraph does.
How to teach consonant blends to kids.
To begin, you should tell your students that they will be learning about consonant blends and then explain what they are like I did above.
You can then start by saying words with consonant blends aloud and have students listen and tap out the sounds as they hear them. Have students find the blend in each word.
Then you can begin writing words on the board and having students find the consonants that are grouped together in each word. Underline or circle the consonant blend within each one.
Finally, students can work on sounding out the words you have written on the board. Start with the first letter, then the second, then the third and the fourth. Then blend them together to read the word.
